St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church is one of the historic anchors of Baltimore’s Greek-American and Orthodox Christian community, located in the heart of Greektown / Highlandtown in Southeast Baltimore. Founded in the early 1950s to serve the growing concentration of Greek families in that part of the city, the parish emerged because local Greek residents needed a closer spiritual, educational, and cultural center rather than traveling across Baltimore to older parishes. The first priest was assigned in 1953, and the church became a defining institution for preserving Hellenism, Orthodox worship, Greek language, and community life for generations of Baltimore Greeks.
The church is part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America under the Metropolis of New Jersey and remains a fully active parish today. It is known not only for Divine Liturgy and Orthodox sacraments, but also for Greek School, youth ministries, cultural festivals, philanthropic work, scholarships, and preserving Baltimore’s Greektown identity. Sunday worship typically includes Orthros and Divine Liturgy, with services rooted in traditional Byzantine worship and Greek Orthodox liturgical life.
St. Nicholas is often regarded as Baltimore’s most distinctly “Greektown” parish—smaller and more neighborhood-centered than some larger regional Greek Orthodox churches, but deeply woven into the identity of Southeast Baltimore’s Greek-American population. Community discussions also frequently describe it as one of Baltimore’s oldest and most culturally Greek parishes.
