A teenager from Larissa will be flag-bearer at Wednesday's Oxi Day parade in Giannouli, and his path to that moment started ten years ago in a burning apartment with no electricity. On November 23, 2016, a candle being used for light started a fire in a fifth-floor flat on Mandilara Street in central Larissa. Stefanos, who was around four years old at the time, was strapped in his pushchair as the flames closed in around him. Firefighter Ilias Arvythas pushed into the burning room, cut him loose, and carried him out, suffering a minor burn in the process. Stefanos was rushed to Aglaia Kyriakou children's hospital in Athens and spent time in intensive care with serious burns. He went through multiple reconstructive surgeries in the years that followed. His mother never forgot what Arvythas did. Earlier this year she spoke publicly about that night, saying plainly that she owes her son's life to that man. The family has stayed in contact with Arvythas ever since. Now a student at the Special Primary School of Giannouli, Stefanos will lead his school's procession at the October 28 parade in Giannouli, Larissa, with his mother by his side. The October 28 parade marks Oxi Day, Greece's annual commemoration of its refusal to surrender to Axis forces in 1940, now 86 years ago. #OxiDay #Greece #Larissa
