Turkey's foreign minister Hakan Fidan has declared the dispute over the Greece-Cyprus undersea cable NAVTEX "resolved," as the vessel set to lay the cable prepares to depart from Heraklion. The Abeille Marengo is expected to sail on Monday, November 9.
The NAVTEX dispute centered on conflicting maritime notices covering the cable route between Greece and Cyprus, a project Turkey had objected to as cutting through waters it claims jurisdiction over. Fidan's declaration that the matter is now settled signals a diplomatic step back from Ankara, at least for the moment.
The Abeille Marengo had been in a holding pattern at Heraklion ahead of the planned cable-laying operation. With Fidan's statement now on the record, the ship is set to begin its voyage Monday.
The Greece-Cyprus cable is a significant infrastructure link for both countries, reinforcing energy and communications connectivity between the two. Turkey's opposition had threatened to delay or complicate the project before this apparent resolution.
